The Venezuelan Public Prosecutor’s Office has strongly rejected the statements made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, regarding the acts of violence and terrorism that erupted in the country following the election results on July 28.
In a statement issued this Friday, the Public Prosecutor’s Office emphasized the seriousness of the situation and defended the actions of state security forces, insisting that there is no evidence linking them to the repression of demonstrators that resulted in injuries or deaths.
The Prosecutor’s Office asserted that responsibility for the deaths and injuries lies with armed groups and criminals who participated in the protests, thereby dismissing any allegations of government involvement in these acts.
Criticism has been directed at Türk for his perceived lack of objectivity, as he appears to blame the Venezuelan government for violence instigated by opposition groups.
The prosecutor highlighted that Türk’s remarks are “incoherent for a human rights defender,” noting his weak acknowledgment of the approximately 1,000 unilateral coercive measures imposed on Venezuela, which are aimed at destroying its economy and inflicting pain and suffering on its population.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office further stated that Türk’s comments are detrimental to international human rights law by ignoring the numerous violent plots orchestrated by factions seeking to destabilize the legitimately constituted government.
In this context, the Prosecutor’s Office underscored the negative impact of international sanctions imposed on Venezuela, which have exacerbated the country’s economic and social crises.
The prosecutor remarked, “These statements by the High Commissioner resemble those of a spokesperson who is subservient to foreign powers hostile to his country and to the Venezuelan people.
They echo the slanders and directives issued from their golden exile by fugitives from the Venezuelan justice system who are being prosecuted for brutal terrorist acts.”
The Venezuelan government also issued a statement, labeling Türk’s remarks as irresponsible and aligned with the interests of hostile foreign powers.
Consequently, it urged the High Commissioner to adopt a more balanced perspective and avoid manipulation by those promoting an anti-democratic narrative.
